Why We Built the VANDAL DSP

Modern performance cars are more capable than ever. More power. More data. More adjustability. More technology.
Yet for drivers building cars around track and competition use, the component connecting them to all of it is often still designed around an entirely different set of priorities.
Factory steering wheels have to accommodate comfort features, driver-assistance systems, infotainment controls, manufacturing requirements and the needs of a broad range of drivers.
For a purpose-built motorsport application, many of those priorities no longer apply.
We wanted something different.
The VANDAL DSP began with a simple question:
What would a steering wheel look like if it were designed around the driver first?
Remove What Doesn’t Matter
The first step wasn’t adding features.
It was deciding what didn’t belong.
A motorsport steering wheel should put the controls a driver actually needs within immediate reach, without forcing their hands away from the driving position.
Information should be communicated quickly. The structure should feel solid without unnecessary mass. Every interaction should feel deliberate.
That philosophy shaped everything from the overall geometry of the DSP to the placement of its buttons, rotary controls, joysticks and paddles.
Nothing was added simply because we could add it.
Every control had to earn its place.
Bring the Important Information Forward
A modern performance car can generate an enormous amount of data.
The challenge isn’t accessing more information. It’s presenting the right information in a way that minimizes distraction when the driver is concentrating on the track.
The DSP brings supported vehicle and performance data directly into the driver’s natural field of view through its integrated display.
Instead of separating the controls from the information, the two become part of the same interface.
The driver’s hands stay where they belong.
The information stays directly in front of them.
It’s a relatively small change in distance.
It’s a significant change in interaction.
Build Something That Feels Purpose-Built
Motorsport hardware should feel mechanical, precise and immediate.
That’s why we obsessed over things that rarely make a specification sheet exciting: paddle movement, button resistance, rotary feedback, structural rigidity, machining tolerances and the way the wheel feels when your hands first wrap around it.
Materials and specifications matter.
But the interaction between all of those components matters more.
The DSP wasn’t designed to simply look like motorsport hardware.
It was designed to function as motorsport hardware.
Hardware Was Only Half the Problem
A modern driver interface is more than a collection of switches.
The electronics and firmware have to work together with the physical controls, display and supported vehicle data as a complete system.
That’s why software integration became an important part of DSP development.
CANchecked is VANDAL’s firmware partner, bringing its established motorsport electronics experience to the DSP platform.
Through the CANchecked App, drivers can configure supported functions and personalize aspects of the DSP interface without turning configuration into an engineering exercise.
Hardware provides the interface.
Software makes it yours.
Two Years of Evolution
The DSP wasn’t created by taking an existing steering wheel and adding a screen.
It was developed as a complete system.
Mechanical design. Electronics. Firmware. Vehicle integration. Ergonomics. Manufacturing. Software.
Each part affected the others.
Each prototype answered questions — and created new ones.
Geometry changed. Controls moved. Paddles evolved. Electronics were revised. Software capabilities expanded.
More than two years of development went into turning the original idea into the product you see today.
Built Around the Driver
Throughout that development, the objective never changed.
Remove what isn’t needed.
Put important controls within reach.
Bring useful information into the driver’s field of view.
Make every interaction deliberate.
And engineer the complete system for the environment where it’s intended to perform.
The result is the VANDAL DSP — a purpose-built motorsport display wheel developed for track-day, modified and competition builds.
The original question was simple:
What would a steering wheel look like if it were designed around the driver first?
The DSP is our answer.
