OEM Integration Without the OEM Wheel

Replacing a factory steering wheel used to be relatively simple.

Remove the original wheel. Install the new hardware. Continue building the car around the driver.

Modern performance cars changed that.

Today’s steering wheel isn’t simply connected to the steering column. It’s part of the vehicle’s electronic architecture, carrying controls and communications for systems that may remain important in a track or competition build.

That created one of the biggest engineering challenges behind the VANDAL DSP:

How do you completely transform the steering wheel without making the vehicle feel incomplete?

The Modern Steering Wheel Problem

Traditional aftermarket steering wheels often introduce a compromise.

You gain the shape, size and feel of a purpose-built wheel — but potentially lose convenient access to supported vehicle functions.

In a modern performance platform, those functions can include controls and settings that remain useful in a motorsport environment.

We wanted the DSP to feel integrated into the vehicle rather than simply attached to it.

That meant vehicle integration had to be considered from the beginning.

Keep the Controls That Matter

The DSP is designed to retain access to supported factory functions through controls positioned directly on the wheel.

Rather than trying to replicate the physical layout of the original steering wheel, we reconsidered how those interactions could work within a performance-focused interface.

Buttons handle immediate commands.

Rotary controls make rapid adjustments intuitive.

Multi-directional joysticks allow several inputs to occupy very little physical space.

The result is a dramatically different steering wheel without unnecessarily abandoning useful functionality already present in the vehicle.

Plug In. Don’t Re-engineer the Car.

Installing a steering wheel shouldn’t mean redesigning the vehicle’s electrical system.

For supported vehicle applications, the DSP is engineered around application-specific integration using dedicated harnessing and hardware.

The electronics inside the system allow the DSP to communicate with supported vehicle functions while presenting those controls through a completely different driver interface.

For motorsport applications outside our vehicle-specific platforms, the DSP is also available in a standalone configuration with a flying-lead harness, providing greater flexibility for custom builds.

Vehicle-specific or standalone, the objective remains the same:

Make integration part of the product, not a problem left for the customer to solve.

More Than Mechanical Integration

Physical installation is only one part of integrating modern racing hardware.

Electronics, firmware and configuration have to work together with the mechanical interface.

For the DSP, CANchecked is VANDAL’s firmware partner, providing the firmware platform behind supported functionality and configuration through the CANchecked App.

That combination allows the physical controls, electronics and software to operate as parts of the same system.

The complexity happens behind the interface.

The driver’s experience should remain simple.

Built Around the Driver

Every detail of the DSP was developed with a clear purpose: give the driver a more focused connection to the machine.

From control placement and paddle actuation to vehicle integration and data visibility, each element was engineered around the demands of track and competition environments.

The result combines motorsport-focused ergonomics with the electronics and integration required by modern performance platforms.

Nothing unnecessary.

Nothing added simply for appearance.

Just the controls, information and feedback the driver needs, positioned where they need them.

That’s the difference between simply replacing a steering wheel and engineering a complete driver interface.

The factory wheel may be gone.

The functionality that matters doesn’t have to disappear with it.
